State and Economy

Government finances since 1950

Spending, revenue and debt of general government as a share of GDP.

Tax on work, by type of earner

Income tax plus employee and employer contributions, as a share of what the employer pays in total. Only people in work, so no pensioners or people on benefits. VAT, excise, local levies and mandatory pension premiums are not included. OECD countries only.

People on a working-age benefit

Disability, unemployment, social assistance and survivor benefits (CBS, yearly average), as a share of the labour force (ILO). One person can receive two benefits, so this slightly overstates people.

Migration

Net migration per year (bars) and the share of residents born abroad (dots, UN estimates every few years).

Ageing

People aged 65 and over per 100 people aged 15 to 64, against the world median.

Government workers

People employed by general government (central, regional, local and social security, so including teachers and care staff in public service), per 1,000 residents, against the median of the countries that report it.
