AI usage per day

How much is done with AI: the number of tokens that models process, and below that how much is being built with AI, measured by downloads of coding agents and AI libraries.

Tokens per week by provider, OpenRouter

This is real usage: the number of tokens that AI models processed via OpenRouter, for apps, agents and developers worldwide. OpenRouter is an intermediary; anyone buying directly from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google is not included here. As a result, cheap and open models (DeepSeek, Z.ai, Xiaomi) are overrepresented and Claude and GPT are underrepresented. The trend is the growth of AI usage outside the big first-party channels. "Stealth" models are anonymous test models. A week in progress is not included; OpenRouter only provides the series per week. The layers add up to the total. OpenRouter only lists the nine largest providers separately each week; a provider that falls outside that is counted under "Other" for that week.

How much is being built: downloads

View

Coding agents, downloads per day

The command line tools developers use to program with an AI agent. Every install and update counts, and unlike a co-author line in a commit, nobody can remove this. Cursor is not included: it is a standalone editor that does not go through npm.

AI libraries for apps and agents, downloads per day

The libraries companies use to build their own AI apps, agents and integrations. Automated builds count too: the level is not a number of users, but the trend is a good measure of how much is being built and rolled out. Downloads drop on weekends, so the 7-day average is on by default.

Omitted days
Sources: OpenRouter (openrouter.ai/rankings), tokens per week and per provider; npm downloads API (api.npmjs.org), per day, with a delay of a few days. "Adjusted for npm" divides by the combined downloads of react, lodash and express: what remains is the growth of AI on top of the growth of npm as a whole. Refreshed every Tuesday.
