Three things the NWS says that surprise people
- Wind chill applies only to people and animals. A car radiator or water pipe never drops below the actual air temperature.
- Frostbite needs the real air temperature to be below freezing. Above 0 °C wind chill can chill you (hypothermia) but cannot freeze skin.
- The index assumes a clear night sky. Bright sunshine may make it feel 10 to 18 °F (about 5.6 to 10 °C) warmer.
